Jay Henderson owns a business called Real Talent Hiring and is the author of the highly successful book The Ultimate Small Business Guide To Hiring Super-Stars, and today we discuss how to identify super-stars for your business and also how to avoid duds.

If you want to scale your business, grow your business and reach your goals fast, and maybe retire quicker, you need to hire the right people. The poorer hiring decision you make the longer you'll have to wait for your goals.

One of the fastest ways to ruin your business is to hire the wrong person, but hiring the right person and putting them in the wrong position can be just as detrimental to your business.

Objective Reliability

Objectively measuring how people think and make decisions, is far better than subjectively measuring how people will behave in certain situations. People can always fake their behaviour, but they cannot fake how they think and make decisions.

The best thing you can do for your team is making a great hiring decision, and the worse thing you can do for your team is making a poor hiring decision.

Risk Level

Employing people for your business is all about managing risk. When you're employing someone it's about the three P's:

1. PROTECTING the business

2. Accessing the employees true POTENTIAL

3. Thier long-term PERFORMANCE

Be In Hiring Mode

Always be in hiring mode, even if you're not looking for someone right now. Nothing worse than hiring when you're desperate.

You should create a page on your website that is designed specifically to sell your business to prospective future team members and you should market this page exists. Be honest and let them know you're not hiring right now, but they can still send in their details. It's important to keep these on file for future use.

Have Clarity

Clarity is the foundation. You need to know exactly who you want to employ before you write and design your ad for the position. When you do this the ad becomes far more powerful and it will pull the right person in the door.

You may get fewer responses and application, but they will be more suited to the position and will save you a lot of time.

Think of your employee avatar the same way you would identify your client or customer avatar.

Catch Them Off Guard

When you've selected your applicants, try and catch them off guard by doing a quick phone interview, but do it at an unscheduled time, when they least expect it. You may tell them you will call at 3.00pm, but instead, call them at 1.30pm

People are preparing for interviews so surprise them and try to throw them off the game.

Monday Morning Tip

Get crystal clear on the three most important impact things you can do that will make a difference in your business and make sure your team is on the same page and they are also crystal clear on your strategy and what you need them to do.

When it comes to hiring a new employee if your gut is telling you YES...do not listen to it. Just make sure you follow the right processes you would normally follow, however, if you're gut is telling you not to hire them, always follow your gut.
