Sales Development Representative at Lever Are you motivated to get in on the ground floor of a top startup, while representing a best-in-class product that you can personally get behind? Based in San Francisco, California, Lever is looking for a smart, competitive individual who possesses the skill-set and personality to launch a sales career. As a SDR at Lever, you will develop your sales skills to speak with executives from thousands of companies to learn about their internal recruiting process, in order to qualify leads for our Account Executives and contribute to a high-performing sales operation machine. Lever solves the #1 challenge for every CEO: hiring. Recruiting is a hot market, and the new generation of Applicant Tracking Systems, like Lever are in high demand. Joining me to discuss this opportunity is Michael Gallagher, Sales Recruiter at Lever. TALKING POINTS: Michael welcome to JobsinPods. I know Lever is a fast-growing startup, tell us about the company. MICHAEL: Lever was founded just over 4 years ago. Our CEO Sarah Nahm co founded the company with Nate Smith our CTO and Randal Truong CPO. Sarah has an incredible background- her first job out of college was speech writing for Marissa Meyer before going onto the Google Chrome team as a product marketing manager. One of Lever’s true strengths has been the quality of talent we have attracted internally. At Lever we really walk the talk when it comes to talent. We put a ton of thought into how we hire and onboard people, as well as how we help them grow in their careers. Lever is built on design thinking. Any tools / features we launch we do so on research from the community we work in. How many employees does Lever Have? MICHAEL: As of right now Lever is 90 employees strong all based in San Francisco. Some of our biggest clients are Yelp, Eventbrite, Netflix, Change.org It’s a fairly robust team that will be growing aggressively this year. By end of 2017 we are planning to have these teams double. That doesn’t mean we will just be hiring people off the street- we are going to continue our high bar for talent. The recruiting team’s philosophy is speed with quality. What are the specific background and qualifications you’re looking for in a SDR? MICHAEL: I get this question a lot and the answer really depends on a number of different things. There is no specific background or skillset for a successful salesperson. Great sales people and leaders come from all backgrounds and styles. That being said one thing Lever does like to hire for is experience. Because we are small we don’t have the same training programs as a Salesforce or LinkedIn so ideally we want a candidate who understands a sales cycle whether that be through internships in college or a full time role after college. People applying to Lever should also have a builder mindset. Builders are people who want to come in and make impact. Take pride in their role and are much driven to succeed without being pushed by others. When working in a startup there are all sorts of highs and lows so being flexibale and having the ability to adapt to those situations is also vital. You’re based in San Francisco, so I assume potential candidates need to live in the Bay Area? MICHAEL: Ideally yes. Just from a timing point of view we are looking to expand the team quite quickly. If candidates are already planning on moving to the Bay than I am 100% open to having those conversations. Who will your new SDR report to? MICHAEL: As of right now, the team reports to our CFO Eileen Treanor who has been instrumental in building out our SDR strategy for 2018. Eilleen also partners with Channa Heng who is our unofficial official SDR Trainer. Channa whose background is in Salesforce Operation’s comes to us from Yesware and Hubspot. With that background she really understand systems and also the best way for our SDR’s to outreach to prospects. The team itself is full of experienced all stars. They are a tight knit team who collaborate regularly The job description for this role on Lever’s career site is quite unique - detailing a progression of 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year with Lever. Can you briefly outline the growth opportunities this position offers? MICHAEL: We prefer not to call them job descriptions. We instead call them impact descriptions. You’ll find that job postings do the exact opposite of what you want them to do they turn away top talent. Some of the best talent I have hired hasn’t exactly always fitted the mold of 3-5 years experience. Potential is something that is just as important to me in an interview than solid experience. People need to see what they will be doing in the role instead of seeing a list of requirements. Lever’s philosophy is very much quality over quantity. For our SDR’s we have built out a program for success. Starting out working outbound leads for our Mid Market Account Executives once ramped up and consistently hitting their goals we will start to transition them into a closing sales role for our corporate AE team. Not everyone will go down that road- I am sure we will have team lead and management positions open on our SDR team also. Our policy at Lever is to continue is to promote people from within while also blending that with external hire who can their experience. What do you, personally, like best about working for Lever, Michael? MICHAEL: Where do I start? Personally, being a recruiter and getting to work with recruiting software everyday is amazing to me. I love getting to test our new products and features, making recommendations and seeing them implemented. Outside of this I love the responsibility that I am given. One thing I heard about the mantra of the New England Patriots this year's was #doyourjob. We have a slightly differently saying.. Ownyourjob. What that means to me is that there is no one who is going to micromanage you. When we hire someone it’s because we have set the expectation that you will come in learn the role and have a major impact. What benefits and perks does the company offer? MICHAEL: 100% Premium Health Care including vision plus dependent(s) - Dental Coverage - Up to $100 per month towards gym membership - Up to $100 towards new headphones when you first start - $92 per month for a Muni Pass or use $83 towards Lyft to work - Catered Lunches every day as well as team/ company off sites per quarter. - Unlimited PTO including sick time. One more question and one more assumption. I assume those applying for this position will be using your product, and will find it far more friendly than many of your competitor’s Applicant Tracking Systems? MICHAEL: How I like to describe Lever is that it is human on the front end but automated on the back end. The product itself was actually one of the main reasons why I decided to join Lever. Having used it in my previous company I was so blown away by the ease of use. It literally put hours back in my day especially our integrations with Linkedin and Google calendar.
