Om meer van die metode van risiko-verspreiding in boerdery te wete te kom, het ek vroeër vanjaar by die VKB Bieliemieliefees in Reitz gesels met Neil Claassen, ‘n gesiene boer van die omgewing en hoofbestuurslid van Graan SA in die Reitz-streek.
Neil verduidelik dat die Oos-Vrystaat ‘n verskeidenheidsvoordeel geniet, in die sin dat hulle basies enige gewas kan verbou. Hulle is egter ietwat genoodsaak om te diversifiseer anngesien die klimaat, en veral die reënvalpatrone, geweldig verander het in die streek.
Basies kom dit daarop neer dat, in landbou vandag, ‘n mens jouself moet aanpas en herposisioneer...
