Brix

Anytime you take a trip to the Napa Valley, be sure to stop at Brix for lunch. To sit outside on their terrace overlooking the vineyards and gardens would be enough to win you over, but the superb food makes it a complete wine country dining experience. The day we stopped there was gloriously sunny so the large umbrellas offered shady relief from the heat.

We wisely chose to share four starters which was more than enough food to satisfy our appetites. The warm asparagus salad came with prosciutto, green garlic cream, chopped egg and sofrito vinaigrette. Then the roasted mushroom cigars with frisee salad and truffle aioli were uniquely flavorful and crispy in texture. When the “dueling wedge” salads arrived, we agreed there was no competition. Each one was delicious and artistically presented. Baby iceberg lettuce halves were adorned one with bacon, tomatoes, red wine blue cheese dressing and the other with pickled peppers, olives, brioche artichoke and green goddess dressing. The final appetizer of tempura greenbeans with spicy mustard sauce was the perfect way to celebrate the spring and enjoyeven more local grown vegetables.

To be a chef who can walk right out to the restaurant garden for most of the fresh ingredients must be paradise of the culinary kind. Do yourself a favor and eat at Brix any time of year, but when the weather is beautiful, I can’t think of a more perfect spot.

Take Mom for Mother’s Day and she’ll thank you for your brilliant choice!
