Rabbis were expected to help settle legal matters among the Jews, but Jesus refused to get involved initially because the appeal was outside the sphere of His true mission. He didn’t come to make people rich. Luke 12:13-21 shares the account of Jesus' warning to everyone, not just the disciples, against covetousness. Covetousness stems from a poverty mindset and is an unquenchable thirst for getting more and more of something we think we need in order to be truly satisfied (serving mammon). Jesus made it clear that true life does not depend on an abundance of possessions.
