Hi LOV,

Happy New Year. What have you resolved to achieve this year? Many of us often set huge, lofty, and daunting goals for ourselves each New Year. "I will lose 100 lbs. before my vacation in August!" "I will be promoted to CEO by December even though I graduated in January." "I will never eat anything with sugar in it again!" "I will open 10 $1M companies in 2024!" Sound familiar?

I want to remind us all to take each day as it comes and move in smaller, incremental steps toward improving yourself and reaching your realistic goals for this year. Lofty goals sometimes equal really deep disappointments. Set goals that are realistic and attainable. From there, move in steps to reach your goals. The GPS relies on a final destination being identified then plans each mile of the way in order to help us reach our desired place of arrival. Plan realistic and attainable goals, then backtrack and plan out smaller steps of the journey.

Races are won step-by-step, not by solely looking and focusing on the finish line. If you can only focus on the finish line without planning smaller strategic, intentional, and well-aligned steps that will ultimately help reach that finish line, the race may end in disappointment. You must consider your breathing, your opponents' strengths and weaknesses, your energy reserves versus the race's course, the weather and how it affects your stamina, etc. The same is true with our goals. Take into account the smaller steps and details that can propel you forward into successful outcomes. If you want to move into the next level of business success, plan out realistic and achievable steps that can help you get there. Maybe taking a leadership course or finding a mentor who has traveled the same path is how to begin moving toward that goal. "Losing 50 lbs. in January" is not an achievable goal and cannot be reached without unhealthy practices being invoked. Maybe the goal of eating a healthy salad instead of fast food for lunch and dinner and walking around the neighborhood for 1 hour each day after work and on weekends are smaller, realistic steps that can help you reach your ultimate goal of being healthier and having more energy or losing weight by the end of the year. If your goal is to grow your relationships into happier and healthier ones by the end of 2024, try doing one thing each day to positively influence the relationship (e.g., if you are not good at verbal praise, give one compliment to those you love each day) and build up from there.

Setting attainable and realistic goals and working backward to foster a strategic and doable plan that identifies the "how" and "when" will help you succeed. Most importantly, consult the Lord, trusted friends and family, and mentors who can help guide you and lead you in the right direction. The accountability partners you trust can help keep you on track and encourage you when you feel like giving up. Taking the smaller steps each day to build towards your goals is key. Don't get overwhelmed with looking for the finish line, but work on smaller segments of the big picture and give yourself grace throughout the process. If today is a less than successful day, don't wait for tomorrow. Start over right now!

We can reach our goals if we plan ahead, formulate incremental tasks to keep us on track with the goal, and celebrate the small wins along the way. If we do this, by December of 2024, we'll have made great strides towards being better than we were in 2023!

Remember to live for purpose, in purpose, on purpose, and with purpose! Be blessed in 2024 and beyond!
