Currently, drivers only have to be tested for alcohol in those circumstances, although it used to be the option of Gardai to drug test them as well. Research that has been carried out on road accidents in the State shows that more people than ever are driving under the influence of drugs and it is in this evidence that the law has been amended by the Minister of State in the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers. Léiríonn taighde atá déanta ar thubaistí bóthair sa Stát go bhfuil níos mó daoine ná riamh ag tiomáint faoi thionchar drugaí agus is ina fhianaise sin atá an dlí leasaithe ag an Aire Stáit sa Roinn Iompair, Jack Chambers. Jack Chambers said today that intoxication caused by alcohol or drugs is one of the four main causes of road accidents in the State. Dúirt Jack Chambers inniu go bhfuil meisce de bharr alcóil nó drugaí ar cheann de na ceithre phríomhchúis atá le tubaistí bóthair sa Stát. Gardai have already bought 10,000 drug testing kits under the idea of their new charge. Tá 10,000 foireann tástála drugaí ceannaithe ag na Gardaí cheana féin faoi thuairim a gcúraim nua. The test takes about eight minutes from start to finish, but according to the new law, people are not allowed to wait longer than half an hour.
