Genesis 3:6-7 – When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

The first duty of a husband is to protect his family … but Adam allowed himself and his wife Eve to be deceived by Satan.

This is how shame came into the world. Adam and Eve had nothing to hide before they sinned but, afterward, they wanted to cover themselves.

If you’ve ever had a dream you were naked in public, you can imagine how they felt. But even if we have no physical shame, everyone carries moral shame. If everything we’ve ever done became public information, we couldn’t leave the house. One survey showed that fifty percent of adult males carry a secret so dark that, if it were exposed, it would destroy their lives.

Shame is a negative emotion, but it has a positive side. It means we’re not as bad as we could be, and we know we’re not as good as we should be. The work of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of our sins, so that we can repent, and be restored to God.
