(This episode is rated “E” b/c of sexual themes, swearing.) Oh my gawd, Caravaggio was a hot MESS. Let’s talk about it. But after that, let’s talk about my Baroque beau, Artemisia Gentileschi. Somebody fan me. Before links, I want to make a note on something I said in the podcast: I didn’t mean to say or imply that Caravaggio received ZERO instruction in drawing whatsoever; I would guess that he probably did. However, we don’t have any drawings he would have created during this time, and as we know from his paintings, drawing wasn’t something he applied to his later work anyway. It’s just a big, blurry subject. You feel me? If you have any more information on this though, send it my way: adi@artxadi.com Some relevant works by Micky (Michelangelo Merisi) C (da Caravaggio): David with the head of Goliath: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…iathVienna.jpg Martyrdom of Saint Matthew: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…San_Matteo.jpg The Calling of Saint Matthew: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…San_Matteo.jpg Works by Artemisia Gentileschi: (SWOON) *upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…lio_-_1632.jpg *www.wikiart.org/en/artemisia-gent…d-the-elders-1610 *www.wikiart.org/en/artemisia-gent…-condottiero-1622 My fav of Artemisia’s Judiths: www.theweeklings.com/wp-content/upl…entileschi.jpg www.wikiart.org/en/artemisia-gent…-maidservant-1613 upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…rt_Project.jpg Some of her father’s works (Orazio Gentileschi): *en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orazio_Gent…_Art_Project.jpg *upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…-_WGA08577.jpg If you haven’t checked it out already, go check out (or order yourself a copy) of Victoria Finlay’s book Color: A Natural History of the Palette because we’ll be talking about it more in depth next week! www.amazon.com/Color-Natural-His…lay/dp/0812971426 As always, you can find me in these places… Artxadi.com adi@artxadi.com twitter.com/legitarthistory Music is “Cardboard Engineering” by Jesse Spillane.
