John Durbin, Family Pastor
This week in VBS we learned all about How and Why God made us. It was so cool to look through the bible at some familiar passages and see how creative and caring our God is. One day, while I was looking over the notes for our event, I started to think about this subject: Why Did God Make Us? Just then, three words popped into my head that I want to share with you today that I think will sum it up for us. Let’s begin by looking at this passage:
2 Corinthians 5:17-21
2 Corintios 5:17-21
The three words that popped into my head are Relationship, Representation, and Reconciliation.
1. Relationship
God’s Plan A for every human that has ever set foot on this planet is that we would be in a relationship with Him. It is so important to Him that he was willing, as this passage tells us, to make Him who knew no sin, become sin for us, so that we could be made the righteousness of God. To be righteous is to be in right standing with God.
- Through Christ we are brought back in to a relationship with God.
- Through Christ we see how that relationship is supposed to happen.
2. Representation (Genesis 1:26-30)
When God created man, He created us in His image. As a part of his plan, we were to be his representation in the earth. He gave us dominion over every living thing.
When sin entered the world through man’s disobedience, we were separated from the relationship that God created us for. If we, who are made in the image of God, are going to represent Him, we must be in right relationship with Him.
3. Reconciliation
Galatians 4:4-7
Gálatas 4:4-7
Man was always meant to live in relationship with God and be His representation in the earth. God never had a Plan B. Jesus was always part of His plan. He set the day, he established the people, and he provided a way for the entire human race to be reconciled to Him.
Why did God make families?
God’s plan for families is no different; He wants us to be a representation of His love in the earth.
Christ’s redemptive work did not just repair the relationship between God and man. The power of His love and redemption works through the whole of mankind to restore the proper function of every relationship. You and your family can only represent His love as you allow his love to permeate your hearts individually and collectively.
Parents, your children need to see God in You so that they can grow in faith and wisdom. Just bringing them to church and VBS is not enough. You must allow Christ to manifest the work of reconciliation in you so that you can begin to walk in right relationship with God and in right relationship with your spouse.
You may say, “John, you don’t what it has been like for me and for my family.” No, I don’t, but God does, and He has made a way for you to become a new creation. When you repent and turn to Him He makes all things new. The old is gone and the new has come.
I love what God has done in our church over the past two years since the family ministry was birthed. I truly believe that disciples are being made here and that as we continue to spur one another on to good works, we are going to see God do more amazing things.
