Davia Spain is a prism. The light and dark of a life buoyed by triumph and marred by tragedy is refracted through her work, the lilt of existence as recognizable as her lithe contralto. Her art is a melange of mediums, a stew of classical and jazz training, electronic experimentation, theater, intrepid filmmaking and sinuous dance. Her latest work, ‘Dawning,’ is an exhalation, a diaphramatic release in which her experiences are explored, absorbed and released through a sci-fi concept album about a woman sent from underwater to save earth. Born in Lagos, raised in California; Omolara Abode, often called Omo for short, spent most of her formative years exploring digital media as a platform for alternative storytelling. After a childhood of experimentation with late 90s consumer equipment, she finessed her technical skills at UCLA’s School of Film and Television, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in production and directing. She is currently completing her Preliminary Teaching Credential in Mathematics. Her creative endeavors led her to the world of immersive media – video projections, mapping, and installations featuring what she calls “video collage” – foregoing the traditional narrative methods of post-production and opting for visually arresting timelines within common yet ever-evolving venues; including art galleries, warehouse raves, nightclubs, and alternative-minded corporate events. Omo anticipates a shift in how film and video are used for creative expression, and has found that immersive media is the tool of using an environment (even virtual ones) for the purpose of making statements through intensely curated content. http://instagram.com/videomo.mov The performances aim to create a physical and conceptual space that enriches and promotes the practice of Los Angeles musicians and visual artists. Funding from this grant, has enabled both organizations to pair six visual artists with six musicians to create 6 new collaborative audiovisual performances. Each performance consists of an original, A/V set. The performance will be broadcast on Dublab’s webstream this Saturday 19th at 4pm. This grant received from mediaThe foundation inc, supports DUBLAB and FEMMEBIT’s shared aim to promote and support our community of LA-based filmmakers, musicians, animators, and creative coders. The project’s all-female roster also aligns with FEMMEBIT’s mission to create a platform for female-identifying artists working in video and new media. By providing diverse talent from DUBLAB and FEMMEBIT’s communities with technical resources, physical space, and a wide-reaching web platform, The Art of Performance provides a unique opportunity for the dynamic, synesthetic aspects of live audiovisual performance to flourish and be shared with an audience now and for years to come. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKaOHy-FoXE&list=PLwv1SuXh4kHzU_-rENW1yXS7DrGoWWnWl
