Passions and tensions were high as a citizen-group of commercial fishermen, sport fishermen and environmentalist traveled around the state seeking public opinion on fishery policy. After 10+ town halls, the group -- often at odds -- drafted recommendations ultimately used by legislators in the Fisheries Reform Act of 1997. In this episode, we learn just how personal the political was to the citizens who helped craft the FRA. Thank you for listening to this special series of Lo & Behold: The Fisheries Reform Act, a podcast by Bit & Grain. This series was made possible by the NC Sea Grant Community Collaborative Research Grant Program. Collaborators included Jimmy Johnson of the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership, oral historian and archivist Mary Williford, Barbara J. Garrity-Blake of Duke University Marine Lab, Karen Amspacher of Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, Sandra Davidson, Baxter Miller, and Ryan Stancil of Bit & Grain, and journalist Susan West. Featuring Discovery Harbor, Stilt, The Summit and Downhill Racer by Blue Dot Sessions The story is told using excerpts from oral history interviews. The interviews, transcripts, and a discussion guide suitable for use in classrooms and public forums are available at https://www.raisingthestory.com/nc-fisheries-reform-act-an-oral-history-perspective/
