Blake Snell’s No-Hitter Propels SF Giants to Series Win, Just One Game Shy of .500

San Francisco Giants starter Blake Snell pitched a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds in the Giants' series opener in Cincinnati. It was the culmination of a stretch of absolute dominance by Snell, whom the SF Giants held onto at the trade deadline despite some belief that they may trade him. Blake Snell's no-hitter came one game after Giants starter Logan Webb pitched a shutout against the A's, emphatically supporting SF Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi's claim that the Giants have the best rotation in baseball.

Snell's no-hitter was a great start to the series, but the Giants still needed to win another game to take at least two out of three. A loss in Game 2 meant the SF Giants must win the third game to win the series, and that's exactly what they did. Robbie Ray allowed two solo homers that put the Giants in an early hole, but those were the only runs he allowed and Matt Chapman's two-run homer tied it and it was all Giants after that in a big 8-2 win, pulling the Giants back to within one game of .500 with a favorable series matchup (at the Nationals) coming up, and a favorable pitching matchup in Game 1 (Webb vs. Patrick Corbin).

Meanwhile, Tyler Fitzgerald can't stop hitting homers and was named NL Rookie of the Month in July. Fitzgerald homered twice in the Giants' series against the Reds, including on Sunday. He now has homered 10 times in his last 16 games, joining an elite list of San Francisco/New York Giants to have accomplished that feat. Fitzgerald, Heliot Ramos, Patrick Bailey, Kyle Harrison, Hayden Birdsong—young players who've made a real impact—has been the best part of the 2024 season for the Giants and should give fans optimism moving forward no matter how 2024 plays out, even if it will be very disappointing if this team misses the playoffs (which is more likely than not).
