Matt Chapman's Grand Slam & Stellar Outfield Defense Lead SF Giants to Victory

The San Francisco Giants came into Saturday's game averaging just 2.87 runs per game since April 24, the lowest mark in the majors. With one swing of the bat in the first inning, Giants third baseman Matt Chapman, who's had a very slow start to his season, put four runs on the board that would prove to be enough to win the game. The SF Giants added a run later on a Patrick Bailey sac fly, but Chapman's two-out, two-strike slam was a huge swing of the bat for the Giants.

The Giants are suddenly dealing with multiple injuries. Nick Ahmed is out with wrist soreness and Casey Schmitt was called up to play short. Jung Hoo Lee hasn't played in a few days but is thankfully back in the lineup today. Patrick Bailey was out with a concussion but thankfully he, arguably the SF Giants' most important position player, was back in action for Saturday's win. Austin Slater was put on the 7-day concussion IL after slamming into the outfield wall. Heliot Ramos was called up in his place. Michael Conforto pulled his hamstring yesterday and is likely to go on the IL, with Luis Matos currently at Oracle Park.

The Giants' outfield defense, in addition to Chapman's slam, was the key to victory on Saturday. Heliot Ramos threw out two runners trying to take second base, and he made an extremely athletic sprinting, tumbling catch to prevent the start of a potentially big inning. Later in the game Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski also threw a man out at second on a ball that looked like it may have been a home run off the bat. All in all, it was a huge win that gives the SF Giants a chance for their second straight series win on Sunday.
