SF Giants Finally Back At .500: Tyler ‘Babe’ Fitzgerald Homers Again!

The San Francisco Giants, with their ace Logan Webb on the mound against a struggling Patrick Corbin, needed to win to pull back to .500 for the first time since June 1. That's exactly what the Giants did, and it started off with a bang. Tyler Fitzgerald homered again—his 11th in his last 17 games—as he continued to etch his name into SF Giants lore. He's one of a handful of players to accomplish such a feat, and the first to do so since Barry Bonds in 2003. Tyler Fitzgerald also became just the fourth shortstop to homer 11 times in a 17-game span, joining Trea Turner, Troy Tulowitzski, and Alex Rodriguez. The sustainability of Fitzgerald's unreal run with the Giants is discussed.

So is the fact that the SF Giants are finally back at .500 for the first time since June 1, when they were 29-29. It took almost exactly many games to get back there, as they're now 57-57. The SF Giants are running out of time, but they're beating the teams they're supposed to beat as they attempt to make the postseason. The Giants are 4.5 games back of the Braves, Padres, and D-backs, who are all tied in wild card position. The Giants have a soft schedule for the next two-plus weeks, outside of a four-game home series against the Braves, and they must take advantage.

Matt Chapman provided a huge two-out, three-run homer in the San Francisco Giants' 4-1 win. Chapman and Blake Snell both started slowly, but their recent play has them absolutely trending towards opting out of their contracts at the end of the season. Giants fans would certainly be frustrated to see both players walk away in free agency, but it is a real possibility. Snell seems less likely to be retained than Chapman, because the SF Giants have been very cautious about not giving pitchers in their 30s long-term deals, which is what Snell would likely be seeking.
