SF Giants Review: Youngsters Bailey, Ramos Lead Overall Solid Position Player Performance

The San Francisco Giants are a disappointing 47-50 at the All-Star break, but contrary to popular belief, their sub-.500 record has more to do with run prevention than run scoring. The Giants' position players, led by young players and veterans alike, were mostly solid in the 2024 season's first half.

Patrick Bailey added offense to his superb defense and was the Giants' best position player. Heliot Ramos came out of nowhere to become an All-Star—particularly important in the absence of Jung Hoo Lee, who was lost for the season due to a shoulder injury. Matt Chapman was a solid contributor on both sides of the ball for the Giants and the underlying numbers suggest there's more in the tank with his bat. LaMonte Wade Jr. leads MLB in on-base percentage when the minimum is set to 210 plate appearances. Only a hamstring injury could slow Wade down and keep him from being an All-Star.

On the disappointing side of things, Jorge Soler, brought in on a three-year contract to mash as the designated hitter, has slumped to roughly average offensive production and it's been a struggle basically all year. Luis Matos had an incredible first week of his season but has since put up dreadful numbers, although it's not time to give up on the promising 22-year-old. Wilmer Flores, last year's most productive hitter on the SF Giants, has been among their worst so far this year.
