SF Giants Stun Pirates Again With Another Epic Comeback Win in Historically Wild Series

The San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates just played one of the wildest series in MLB history. For the first time in MLB history, all three games of a three-game series featured comeback wins of four or more runs. For the SF Giants, it was the first time in franchise history that they had won two games in a row, with both being on the road, after trailing by four-plus runs. The Giants followed up their worst loss of 2024—blowing a four-run ninth-inning lead, with what may have been their two best wins of the season. Wild, wild stuff in Pittsburgh.

Matt Chapman was one of many heroes for the Giants. Chapman played exceptionally well all series long on both sides of the ball. He hit a home run in all three games, including big ones late in the SF Giants' comeback efforts on Wednesday and Thursday. The Giants were down to their final strike with no one on base in the middle game of the series, and Luis Matos singled and aggressively took second on an error in left. Then LaMonte Wade Jr., who leads the majors in walk rate and OBP by a mile, delivered a vintage Late Night LaMonte moment, tying the game with a rocket single to right. The Giants put together a huge four-run rally in the 10th and won. And today they overcame an early Joey Bart grand slam with a five-run eighth en route to another huge win.

Baseball is a game of large samples and the SF Giants are proving that right now. Chapman is a good example, as he struggled mightily for the first month and a half, but is on another planet right now (both with the bat and with the glove). The team overall was below average offensively for much of the season, but suddenly found itself five percent above average by wRC+ coming into today's game. After a 13-hit performance, the Giants' offensive numbers will only look better tomorrow. Most importantly of all, the Giants banked two more wins and pulled to within one game of .500.
