Brian Kelly and LSU Tigers add depth, competition to an underrated position of need through transfer portal

The LSU Tigers punted only 26 times last season. In contrast, punters across the SEC averaged about double the number of punts the Tigers attempted. We knew that Jayden Daniels-Malik Nabers-Brian Thomas Jr. offense was potent, but what we might not talk about enough is how former Tiger punter Jay Bramblett really became an afterthought – LSU never punted.

Now it's a new year with a new quarterback, revamped run scheme, and fresh faces in the wide receiver room. Another change that comes with that is the punter. Bramblett is off to the NFL along with his offensive counterparts from the 2023 season while former number one overall punter recruit Peyton Todd was expected to take over the role. However according to head coach Brian Kelly, he left much to be desired at LSU's Spring Game.

"Not as consistent as I would like," Kelly said. "I thought today was an opportunity for him to say, 'There is no competition here.' He's got to be more consistent, quite frankly."

Kelly saw a need and filled a need with transfer portal addition Blake Ochsendorf, the punter from Louisiana Tech. Ochsendorf averaged 45.7 yards per punt for the Bulldogs last season, best in Conference USA and fifteenth best in the country. How will the punter competition play out throughout the offseason?
