Josh Bell grounded out to first base with the tying run on second base, as the Miami Marlins' rally fell short in the bottom of the ninth inning in their series-opening loss to the worst team in baseball.

Drew Thorpe (3-1) threw 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits while striking out five, becoming the latest in a long line of pitchers to have a career night against the Marlins.

Jazz Chisholm, Jr., had two hits for Miami. Bryan De La Cruz and Xavier Edwards drove in their only two runs.

Brian Hoeing got the start for the Marlins tonight. He went just three innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Nicky Lopez hit two doubles and drove in two runs for the White Sox, (26-54) the only team in MLB with a worse record then the Marlins. (30-58) Luis Robert Jr. put up two hits, two walks and two stolen bases, and Martín Maldonado added an RBI double.

The White Sox finally won their first opening game of a road series this season. They were 0-14 before Friday. The Marlins have lost five games in a row, and seven of their last nine.

The two teams play game two of this three-game series tomorrow, with Marlins’ RHP Yonny Chirinos (0-0, 3.77) facing White Sox LHP Garrett Crochet. (6-6, 3.02)
