Xavier Edwards' RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning scored Griffin Conine with the winning run, giving the Marlins a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals- their 1st win over the Nats in 2024.

Automatic runner Griffin Conine went to third on Nick Fortes’ groundout to second base. Edwards then lifted a soft line drive off Derek Law into left field for the Marlins' first win of the season against the Nats after eight straight losses.

The win was also the Marlins' 10th walk-off 'W' of the year, the most in the National League. Eight of those ten have come in the tenth inning.

The game-winning hit was the first of Edwards’ first career walk-off hit. Edwards singled in his last two at-bats after going 0-8 since returning from the injured list on Tuesday.

Jake Burger's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning tied it 3-3 after the Nationals had just scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead for the first time.

John McMillon (1-1) pitched the top of the 10th for the win, one of several Miami relievers who pitched great tonight.

Marlins starter Valente Bellozo held the Nats to just three hits in six-plus innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out one in his best outing of the season. Jesus Tinoco, Declan Cronin and Calvin Faucher also had scoreless outings tonight.

Washington Starter MacKenzie Gore had a perfect game going through 5 1/3 innings before Griffin Conine drew a one-out walk. Nick Fortes then doubled to drive in Conine on a super close play at the plate- a play he should not have been sent home on- to get Miami on the board.

Washington Manager Dave Martinez then inexplicably took Gore out- he had only thrown 93 pitches- and Edwards and Connor Norby hit two-out singles against Nats reliever Jose Ferrer.

The Nationals erased the 2-0 deficit with a three-run eighth against relievers Mike Baumann and Calvin Faucher. Keibert Ruiz drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Jacob Young’s single. Dylan Crews walked to load the bases. Faucher relieved Baumann and walked José Tena to force in a run. Andrés Chaparro’s RBI fielder’s choice tied it at 2-2 and James Wood’s run-scoring double put Washington ahead.

Gore retired the first 16 before Conine walked on a 3-2 count with one out in the sixth. Fortes then broke up Gore’s no-hit bid with an RBI double for the first run of the game. Fortes’ line drive rolled toward the left field wall, scoring Conine from first.

Otto López’s run-scoring double off reliever Jacob Barnes in the seventh made it 2-0.

The game was seen by a season-low 6,156 fans at LoanDepot Park.

The Marlins welcome in the 1st-place Philadelphia Phillies in for a four-game series starting tomorrow night.

First pitch is set for 6:40pm ET, with Miami Adam Oller (1-1, 3.31 ERA) facing Philly's Ranger Suarez. (11-6, 3.02)

The Marlins are 4-5 vs. the Phils this season.

We will be here 'LIVE' right after the game with your Locked On Marlins POSTCAST, hosted by Jim "GRIES" Grieshaber.
