The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 9-4 thanks to a late offensive surge!

Kyle Schwarber grabbed the Phillies the lead early with his now major league record 14th leadoff homer this season. Trea Turner got in on the action in the 3rd with his 17th homer of the season, a two-run shot to left that gave the Phillies a 4-2 lead.

Unfortunately, the Phillies would need more offense than that as Ranger Suarez struggled through his 5.1 innings pitched. He threw 88 pitches while giving up 4 runs, 2 walks and a career high 12 hits. Suarez has not logged 6 innings in any of his 4 starts since returning from a back injury that landed him on the IL for a month.

The score was tied at 4 heading into the bottom of the 8th inning and that’s when the Phillies got the bats going again! Brandon Marsh worked a 1-out walk, followed by a Kody Clemens double. Then with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, the Rays brought in hard throwing righty Edwin Uceta. With that move, Rob Thomson sent Cal Stevenson up to the plate to pinch hit for Johan Rojas. Stevenson came through with a go-ahead 2-run double. Then Buddy Kennedy recorded his 1st hit as a Phillie with an RBI single to right. To cap off the big inning, Trea Turner hit his second 2-run homer of the game.

That’s when things became even more interesting!

After Uceta gave up the homer to Turner, Bryce Harper took him for a double down the left field line. Nick Castellanos stepped up to the plate next and was promptly drilled by a 98 m.p.h. off his hip. Benches Cleared. No punches were thrown. Uceta was ejected.
