The Red Sox opened up their 3-game weekend series in New York with a thrilling 5-3 comeback win in 10 innings over the Yankees Friday night. Boston used the long ball late in the game to tie it up and eventually win it.

The Red Sox were down to their final strike in the top of the 9th when Masa Yoshida hit a 2-out, 2-run Home Run off of Yankees closer Clay Holmes. It was his third Home Run of the season and first since April 20th at Pittsburgh. Dom Smith was able to extend the 9th with a pinch-hit single and he scored in front of Yoshida.

Justin Slaten worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th to send the game to extra-innings. David Hamilton started at 2nd as the ghost runner, and he trotted home from second on a 2-R Home Run to centerfield off the bat of Ceddanne Rafael that put the Red Sox in front for the first time in the game. Jarren Duran followed with a double and would be left stranded at third base.

Kenley Jansen working in his 2nd straight game worked a scoreless bottom of the 10th for his 17th save of the season and the 437th of his career.

Darn Rain Delay.

Both starters, Tanner Houck for the Sox and Nestor Cortes for the Yankees were cruising through the first 3.5 innings.

Houck with two perfect innings to open up, and then got out a third inning jam with a double play.

Things fell apart in the for the Sox starter in the 4th inning. There was a 38-minute rain delay before Houck was able to get back on the mound.

Houck started the 4th by walking Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Alex Verdugo was retired for the first out of the inning. Gleyber Torres had a lengthy at-bat and managed to reach on an infield single to load up the bases. The Yankees then scored 3 runs on a fielder's choice ground out and an error. The second run scored on a bases loaded walk and that was the end for Houck. The third run of the inning scored on a ground out with reliever Bailey Horn on the mound.

Houck threw 34 pitches in the 4th inning and recorded only one out. He went 3.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs (1 ER). He walked 4, all 4 after the rain delay and struck out 1.

Romy Gonzalez got the Red Sox on the board in the fifth inning with a solo Home Run, his first with the Red Sox. It was the only run allowed by Yankees starter Nestor Cortes who ended up going 6 innings. Cortes allowed only the one run and struck out 8.

The Red Sox were not able to capitalize on two errors by the Yankees in the 8th inning. The 1st two batters reached and moved up to 2nd and third when Luke Weaver threw a ball into centerfield on an errant pick-off attempt at 2nd-base. Jarren Duran struck out, Wilyer Abreu pinch-hit and struck out and Tyler O'Neil grounded to third on the first pitch that he saw.
