“I do not like giving advice. Because when I was young I didn’t like receiving it,” laughs Carlos Cruz-Diez, who has been considered one of the most important artists of the Op Art since the 1960s. Cruz-Diez underlines the processual and on-going nature of an artistic practice in this interview: “It requires a great effort of reading, experiments, failures … And accepting those failures.” Cruz-Diez also poignantly advises to accept the drama of an artistic life. Young artists “should realise that art is not a precise profession with a happy ending.” The artist, like the scientist, spends her whole life investigating a problem, sometimes to no avail. “That’s the beauty of risk,” Cruz-Diez philosophises. “And the beauty of the art adventure.” Carlos Cruz-Diez (b. 1923) is a Franco-Venezuelan artist who has been active within the field of Kinetic and Optical Art since the 1960s. His body of work has established him as one of the key twentieth-century thinkers in the realm of colour. His work has been shown internationally at the MoMA, New York, USA, Tate Modern, London, UK, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, France, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA.
