Gun violence is nothing new in Brazil. It’s all too common in heists, holdups, and disputes between gangs. But targeted mass shootings? Those are rare, which is why what happened as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve 2016 shocked the nation. One man had just committed the largest act of femicide in Brazilian history.
