Cate and Heather interview Cindy Clifford, a freelance voice over artist who has worked in radio and currently hosts her own podcast, It's Me, Cindy. In addition to all of that, she also writes scripts, stories, and monologues. And yes - she is Cate's mom.

In this episode, among other things, we discuss:

  • The idea of making your own luck - how being in the right place at the right time has a lot to do with putting yourself in a position of advantage and taking the steps needed to get there
  • How taking full advantage of opportunities presented to you, even if they might not have been exactly the ones you set out looking for, can help you grow in your career
  • Dealing with the slow periods that are so common - knowing when to expect them and how to not freak out
  • What it was like for Cate to be in Cindy's voice over sessions when she was a wee one
  • How the voice over industry has changed - to become both more efficient, but also less full of personal connections
  • The usefulness of prompts, and what can serve as prompts, and how fiction and nonfiction are different in this regard
  • Community + deadlines = getting things done! Hooray for NaNoWriMo
  • To what degree are we compelled to make money off of our projects? Why/not? Which projects? Why/not?
  • No, in fact the It's Me, Cindy podcast is not sponsored by M&Ms - yet.
  • There is more money in teaching people to do some things, like voice over acting, than actually doing the things these days - sad but true.
  • How does/would it feel to take advantage of this fact in our fields?
  • How has the increased availability and even ubiquity of technological tools that used to be a barrier to entry - like sound equipment or a quality camera - changed the industries that use these tools?
  • Thoughts on creating podcasts
  • The myriad ways in which Cate is clearly Cindy's daughter - mostly re: their outlook on life, their gratitude, and their joie de vivre
