Democrats call for special legislative session on gun safety

Georgia House Democrats are urging Governor Brian Kemp to call a special session of the General Assembly for gun safety legislation following the tragic school shooting in Barrow County that left four dead and nine injured.

During the 2023-24 legislative term, Democratic lawmakers introduced several bills aimed at encouraging or requiring secure firearm storage, but none progressed. House Minority Leader James Beverly highlighted that not one bill received a hearing, stating these measures could address the gun epidemic.

The suspect, a 14-year-old student, was arrested and arraigned on four counts of felony murder. His father also faces charges for allowing access to the weapon. Although the House passed a Republican-backed measure offering tax credits for firearm storage devices, it failed in the Senate.

Democrats argue that passing secure storage bills could have prevented this tragedy. They emphasize the need for bipartisan support to enact meaningful gun safety laws.
