Great Locomotive Chase Soldiers Receive Posthumous Medals of Honor

In 1863, the first U.S. Army Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers from the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War. On Wednesday, the final two raiders, Privates George D. Wilson and Philip G. Shadrach, received their posthumous medals in a White House ceremony led by President Joe Biden.

These Union volunteers seized a Confederate train near Big Shanty, Georgia, aiming to destroy rail lines and hinder Confederate supply routes. Disguised as civilians, they embarked on a daring 90-mile mission, only to be caught and later executed. Their bravery was long overlooked, but Civil War historian Brad Quinlin fought for over a decade to secure this honor. Here are family members of Privates Shadrach and Wilson on what the awards mean to their family:

Today, The General locomotive rests at the Southern Museum in Kennesaw, while The Texas is housed at the Atlanta History Center. Visitors can also explore a replica of the raiders' planning room at the Marietta History Center.
