STORY 1: Marietta Considers Consultant for Homeless Issues

The Marietta City Council is considering hiring a consultant to address the city's homelessness issue, spurred by constituent complaints and funds from opioid settlements. Councilman Carlyle Kent proposed using these funds for a consultant, highlighting the overlap between homelessness and substance abuse. Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson emphasized also addressing mental health issues. Collaboration with Cobb County and other cities is being explored, though the county's use of funds remains uncertain. Local organizations, including MUST Ministries, support the idea. A proposed anti-squatting ordinance and other innovative solutions, such as Atlanta's "housing bank," were also discussed.

STORY 2: Atlanta Braves Launch Wanted in Texas All Star Campaign

Voting for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game is now live, with the Atlanta Braves launching a creative "Wanted in Texas" campaign. This campaign features Braves players with Western-themed nicknames and Wanted posters, coinciding with this year's All-Star Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Fans can vote for their favorite Braves players at Braves.com/vote. Various ballpark activities, giveaways, and promotions are part of the campaign. The first voting phase ends on June 27, and the second phase runs from June 30 to July 3, with final rosters revealed on July 7.

STORY 3: Quilt Show Still on After Woman Backs Car Into Civic Center

The 19th biennial Georgia Celebrates Quilt Show will proceed as planned despite a minor accident on Wednesday morning. An exhibitor accidentally backed her minivan into the entrance of the Cobb Civic Center, causing some structural damage. However, engineers confirmed the building's safety, and the county devised an alternate entrance plan. No serious injuries were reported, and the show, including a preview party for the East Cobb Quilters' Guild, will continue as scheduled starting Thursday morning. Despite the mishap, organizers remain determined to hold the event.

STORY 4: MDJ Time Capsule: The D-Day Invasion

On June 6, 1944, American, British, and Canadian forces stormed Normandy's beaches in a pivotal WWII operation. The Marietta Journal reported the invasion began early morning with heavy bombardment and paratrooper landings. General Eisenhower declared the mission to liberate Europe. In Marietta, the news prompted prayers and a calm, determined response. Locals involved included Maj. Ralph N. Read and Sgt. William Petty, who played key roles. The community's prayer gatherings were noted in national media, reflecting widespread support and anticipation for the operation's success.

STORY 5: Cobb Commission Candidate Appeal Headed Back to Court

Alicia Adams, a Republican disqualified from running for the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, is appealing the decision by the Cobb Board of Elections. The case will be heard on June 20. Adams' disqualification stemmed from a challenge by Democratic activist Mindy Seger, who cited the county's "home rule" map. This map, created by the Democratic majority on the Cobb commission, was intended to keep Commissioner Jerica Richardson in office, but Adams lives outside the boundaries defined by this map. The home rule map's legality is under scrutiny, as the Georgia Supreme Court left its status unresolved. Adams' appeal might determine its constitutionality.
