A rashguard is essential for anyone who wants to protect their skin from the sun and elements, but they need to be taken care of. Not washing and taking good care of a rashguard can cause them to become smelly, lose their protective qualities and even tear. The best way to prevent this is to wash your rash guard after every use, store it properly and avoid using harsh chemicals on them. This is how you can make sure your rashguard lasts for as long as possible and continues to keep you safe while practicing BJJ.

It is crucial to wash your rashguard after every practice to remove sweat, bacteria and any dirt from your body. Always use cold water and a gentle detergent. Never wash your rashguard with hot water or in the dryer, as this can ruin the material and cause it to shrink or stretch. The ideal way to wash a rashguard is to hand wash it after each session. However, most of us do not have the luxury of doing this, so if you must use the washing machine, always place it in a mesh lingerie bag to protect it from other clothing (especially those with Velcro) and any rough materials that can rip or damage the material.

If your rashguard starts to smell or has any stains on it, the best course of action is to soak it overnight in cold water with one cup of baking soda. This will eliminate most odors and help the fabric to return to its original state. It is also a good idea to use a mild laundry detergent that is designed for wetsuits and swimwear.

When you are putting your rashguard back on after soaking it, do not pull it on too tightly or you will be at risk of stretching it out of shape. It is also recommended to store your rashguard in a cool, dry place after it has been washed and dried. Do not fold it or stack it with other clothing, as this can create creases that can damage the fabric over time.

Rashguards are made from very thin fabrics, so you want to take special care when putting them on. You should only put them on with clean hands and always make sure to handle the material with your fingertips, not your fingernails. Rashguards are also not meant to be worn over any t-shirts or other tops that may scratch the material and degrade it over time.

Rashguards are generally made from a combination of spandex, nylon and polyester, or 100% nylon. It is important to read the label on your rashguard to know what materials it is made of, and the specific care instructions that are needed for that type of material. When buying a new rashguard, it is also a good idea to test the fabric's quality by pulling on it and releasing it. It should snap back into shape easily and feel soft to the touch. It is also a good idea to look for a rashguard that is seam stitched with flatlock stitching, as this will ensure the seams do not chafe your skin when you are wearing it.
