SHAPE OF WATER proved that 2017 was truly a great year for film. Today on Trapped in the Screening Room, we take a look Guillermo del Toro’s new fantasy romance, that proves that classic Hollywood is alive and well. The film takes place in 1962’s Baltimore, and tells the story of a lonely mute custodian who just happens to work in a top-secret government laboratory. One night she discovers that the new test subject is an amphibian man who is more then he seems. Set during the Cold War, SHAPE mixes espionage, black comedy, horror, and touching romance in one of 2017’s best films. Also discussed is the film’s place in del Toro’s career, and how he has developed his style. So of course, there is some discussion of CRIMSON PEAK, PACIFIC RIM, and some of his dropped projects such as HELLBOY 3 and his version of THE HOBBITT. Speaking of great films of 2017, in the second half of the show I discuss my favorite film of the year, BLADE RUNNER 2049. Which just happened to come out on Blu-ray, digital, and on some streaming platforms. So, if you missed it in cinemas, it’s worth seeing on Disc. In this section I discuss the original 1982 BLADE RUNNER, and its various cuts. Based on Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, BLADE RUNNER pushed the look and style of the 1980’s. The film went on to reshape the sci-fi genre as we know it, including introducing cyber punk elements, and countless anime. Next up we look at 2049’s background and production history. I then look at 2049’s director Denis Villeneuve’s style and themes. PRISONERS, SICARIO, and ARRIVAL are also looked at. The topic gets a little heavy as we discuss the themes of what it means to be human, and what makes us real. Another topic is the use of music in both films. Vangelis score is one of the iconic tunes of the 1980’s, and with 2049 Hans Zimmer updates the tunes to new heights. MOVIE RATINGS: SHAPE OF WATER (2017) 4.5/5 BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017) 5/5
