The word ‘duty’ has an unpleasant connotation for many, calling to mind heavy burdens and endless to-do lists that never get done. And yet Catholic tradition speaks of fidelity to the ‘duties of our state in life’ as central to personal holiness. How can we reclaim the word ‘duty’ from anxiety, resentment, and stress, and bring it into the full joyful vision of life in Christ as women, mothers, and disciples?
