Reading Conferences is where the magic happens! When you are able to sit one-on-one with students, listen to what they have to say, and correct any academic misunderstanding in real time - students will soar! Today's podcast episode is all about getting started with Reading Conferences. Once the most intimidating part of workshop (at least for me) has grown into one of my favorite parts of the day!

Reading conferences are brief conversations with students about their choice reading. When done effectively, the teacher becomes the facilitator of the conference and focuses on listing to the student. During the conference, encourage your students to share their thoughts and ideas about what they are reading. Quickly assess the student’s comprehension and provide strategies to help them with any areas of difficulty.

The key is to make sure students are engaged in meaningful conversations about their text. Once students are engaged in the process of reading, they will more likely to make connections and grow as readers.

I will also share my process for keeping records. Gone are the days of writing endless notes trying to capture everything a student said during the conference. I'll show how I streamlined my note-taking process into something more manageable.

Are you ready to get started with reading conference? Press play and let's go!

What you will learn:

  • The power of a reading conference to move the needle for students
  • How to use questions to guide students to demonstrate their learning
  • How to implement reading conferences when you can’t confer everyday
