Immigration detention is not a new phenomenon. However, many people are blissfully unaware of these centres, where thousands of migrants are involuntarily held. In this episode, we discuss what immigration detention is, the purpose of these centres and whether there is a need for such a setup. We also discuss what kinds of support can be provided to the detainees whilst they are kept in detention.

Guests:

John Speyer - Director, Music in Detention;

Toby Bull - Journalist & Documentary Filmmaker

About:

Aral Sea Productions X HAVEN Coffee presents Migrant Ground, a limited series podcast that highlights different themes on migration and refugee-hood in the UK. Through interviews with refugees, migrants and organisations who are helping on the ground, we want to open people’s minds and let the audience envision a world where the narrative in the UK has changed.

About HAVEN Coffee:

Set up in February 2019, HAVEN Coffee is a social enterprise serving fair trade, ethically sourced organic coffees with a social mission of promoting refugee arts. As a refugee himself, director Usman Khalid has a keen interest in highlighting some of the issues and false narratives surrounding refugee-hood.

About our Host: Emma Paley

Our host for the podcast is Emma Paley, a recent graduate from Sheffield University. Whilst studying she was involved in various community-led projects, helping and supporting migrants and refugees who have arrived in the UK.

About our Producers: Pauline Blanchet & Thea Sun from Aral Sea Productions

Thea Sun is a recent graduate from the University of Bristol. Her multicultural background spurs a desire to explore stories from different cultures, ideologies, and ethnicities. After graduating from SOAS, Pauline Blanchet founded Aral Sea Productions, an inclusive and sustainable production company aiming to tell human-centred stories.
