In this episode you can hear Mr Cecil Newton's detailed account of the preparation and training for the Normandy landings, including the role of amphibious tanks. He went on to write a book, A Soldier's Tale, which describes his wartime experiences. Mr Newton served with the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards from 1942 to 1945.

Royal Dragoon Guards Oral History Project

This interview is part of a collection carried out by the Royal Dragoon Guards Oral History Project. The aim of the project was to record oral history interviews to provide a permanent record of the diverse experiences of members of the Regiment and its predecessors, the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. Interviews include experiences in WW1, WW2, the Cold War, Palestine, Korea, Aden, Cyprus, Libya, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as stories of family life in the Army. This project was funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
