Bill joined the United States Navy (USN) in 1974 as an enlisted man, before becoming a commissioned officer, soon after joining. He served for 26 years on Active duty, in the Submarine service, reaching the rank of Captain.
In this episode Bill talks about joining the U.S. Navy, and what it was like going through the application process to become a commissioned officer, with less than 1 year in service. He also shares what it was like going through the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, to get his commission, before moving onto the submarine service and being stationed out of Pearl Harbour.
Bill also shares what life was like on submarines, including having his submarine attached to the Royal Navy’s battle group, during the handover of Hong Kong. During his service Bill was assigned to the Pentagon, and shares being in the building during the 9/11 terror attack, when one of the planes hit the Pentagon. Lastly he discusses his book ‘From CO to CEO’ and how this could help others with their transition back to civilian life.
