Over a career in journalism spanning more than 50 years, Gordon Burns interviewed every Prime Minister from Edward Heath to David Cameron, a record unsurpassed by any other broadcaster. He endured threats to his life, was given a stern ticking off by Margaret Thatcher and even shed a tear when Gordon Brown left office - but perhaps not for the reason you may think. Gordon began his career as a newspaper reporter in Belfast, at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland before making his name nationally as the host of The Krypton Factor. He went on to present the BBC’s regional news programme North West Tonight for 15 years. Now semi-retired, Gordon offers media training and consultancy through the Gordon Burns Partnership. In this fascinating conversation with Lawrence Jones MBE, Gordon discusses what it’s like working behind the headlines of some of the country’s biggest stories and offers advice on how to succeed when the odds may seem to be stacked against you.
