For our very first episode of Minds at Work, we welcomed Olivier Maitre, CEO of Thymus Consulting and who has 30 years of expertise in Human Resources. On this 1st episode, Olivier shared his wise perspectives and has broken down the major HR themes for 2018, from technology, employee engagement, millennials, to sharing recruiting experiences and including how HR differs in Hong Kong.

Listen to Olivier discuss:

1. What we will see in HR in 2018 (1.58)

Olivier shared his views on the evolution of human resources, expressing that 2018 will only be a continuation of the evolution we’ve started to see. He gave the example of when he was working in HR in 1988: employee engagement already existed – nothing has really changed.

2. Technology as an enabler, an incredible component for employees (4.15)

Olivier affirmed that technology is an enabler to making us more efficient. However, HR people tend to rely on technology too much and, as a result, forget the crucial human contact.

That being said, for him, technology really has an incredibly positive impact. On both the employer’s and employee’s standpoint.

3. Employee Engagement is not only an HR function (8.50)

“Employee Engagement is not an HR function. Every single manager should be focusing on it.”

Olivier reminisces that employee engagement has always been the number 1 focus – the difference is that the word didn’t exist. He then explained that employee engagement shouldn’t only be an HR function – it should be every leader’s concern.

4. Hong Kong is a difficult place from an employer’s standpoint (10.15)

In Hong Kong, at times, there is a lack of talent for specific niches. It can be difficult for employers.

“We live in a very interesting world because you have so many talents available, but they may not be the ones you need all the time – and employees have the luxury to just resign and find a different job very quickly. That’s what’s unique about Hong Kong.”

5. Tech vs non-tech in Recruiting (11.51)

Then, he explains the amount of tech vs non-tech used in recruiting. On one side, tech brings super-efficient tools – but non-tech still remains the most essential. Human interaction is irreplaceable.

“Tech is only an enabler for making better decisions.”

6. Recruiting is full of surprises (16.05)

Olivier made us laugh when sharing his most original recruiting experiences!

“People in the interview process can show you a complete different face.”

7. Millennials, Mental Wellness, Flexibility (18.43)

Last but not least, Olivier explained how companies are shifting into a more important “Brand image”, given the focus on mental Wellness, flexibility, and basically the satisfaction of Millennials.

“I don’t like the term ‘psychological safety’ as I don’t think there’s any ‘safety’ in psychology. But people are feeling that they are better protected nowadays.”

“Flexibility is appealing but it’s not for everybody.”

This was a great, enriching and insightful first episode –and we hope you think so too! Thanks Olivier for taking time! Stay tuned for the next episode coming soon :) #MindsatWork #Jobable
