We explore our favorite Afro-Latin rhythm (or more precisely, blend of rhythms): Salsa! Our exploration includes a historical contextualization of the development of salsa, highlighting the role of Afro-Cubans and Afro-Latin@s broadly as well as the rhythmical richness inherited from Africa. We also provide a description of the introduction and diffusion of salsa in the United States and discuss the need to recenter blackness and the role that dancers in the Afro-Latin dance scene play in the preservation of the roots of this beloved blend we call salsa.
Our guests are Afro-Cuban folklore expert, dancer, choreographer, and PhD candidate Neri Torres, retired 1st dancer from Conjunto Folklórico Nacional (Cuba) and chair of the Department of Folkloric Dance at Instituto Superior de Arte (Cuba) Alfredo O'Farrill Pacheco, and choreographers, dancers and business owners Norberto "Betto" Herrera, Fuquan Ferrell and Candace Joyner.
