Der Suizid war vorher durch den Mitbegründer der Sekte, Marshall Applewhite, angekündigt worden. Umgebracht haben sich die Anhänger aufgrund ihres Glaubens an ein Recycling der Erde. Die Kleidung der Opfer und was man in ihren Hosentaschen findet wirft jedoch Rätsel auf.
