He was already a polarizing figure in Mississippi when he announced his run for Mayor of Jackson. His regular news editorials, in which he told young thugs to pull up their pants and get jobs, were the stuff of legend. After being elected in 2005, Frank Melton tore into crack houses in the night with a sledgehammer, called out known gangsters, and was arrested in the airport carrying a gun. Even those who had sung his praises, (like Governor Haley Barbour and Fox News commentator Geraldo Rivera,) began to question his methods. Frank died of heart failure two days after losing his bid for reelection.
