Depeche Mode entwickelte sich bis Mitte der 90er zur erfolgreichsten Band dieses Genres. Regelmäßig veröffentlichte die Band neue Alben. Violator aus dem Jahr 1990 stellte einen Höhepunkt dar, Enjoy the silence und Personal Jesus sind inzwischen Klassiker der Popmusik. Persönliche Krisen, Drogenmissbrauch und Zerwürfnisse innerhalb der Band schwächten die Gruppe; Alan Wilder verließ sie schließlich. Als Trio hielt Depeche Mode sein Niveau, entwickelte den für die Band typischen metallischen Synthieklang mit Rockelementen weiter.
Ausgedehnte Welttourneen feierten die Musik und die besondere Verbundenheit zwischen Band und ihrem Publikum. Auch nach Corona und dem überraschenden Tod des Gründungsmitglieds Andrew Fletcher hielt dies an. Sänger Dave Gahan und Komponist Martin Gore sind nach wie vor – trotz Soloprojekten – sicht- und hörbar Depeche Mode.
