This one turned into a bit of a rant (thankfully not one of the Eric Clapton variety...), so apologies in advance for the ramblings of a madman.

To be quite blunt: I am tired of musicians' incessant pretentiousness and feelings of superiority. We fancy ourselves a special breed of humans who see the world differently and are the champions of art, adding color to an otherwise grey, cold existence. Amidst a mass of sedated NPCs us elite "artists" are awake, not falling prey to the comforts of an existence defined by conformity.

The reality? No, we are not special. What makes us all truly human is our creativity, our ability to take our emotions and express them in a tangible form. All human beings are capable of doing so. Now, I can offer a special acknowledgement for those who are willing to offer their expressions to the world so that the rest of us can experience them too.

So here's the flip side of the conversation, the more positive side: your art matters. Your personal form of expression makes the world a better place. Many artists bemoan the current state of "everyone makes music now", but I think it's a truly wonderful thing. I want to live in a world in which every one of us finds our favorite art form and contributes art to the world. And the more unique and individualistic that you can make your art, the better! Don't let anyone else tell you how your art needs to sound, look, or feel.
