Aino Oni-Okpaku is a rare type of person. Born in Sweden, she met her Nigerian husband in USA and moved to Nigeria in 1973. Since then she’s never looked back and this year is celebrating 40 years in business in Nigeria – a remarkable feat for anyone, anywhere in the world. Along the way she’s even picked up a chieftaincy title and is now a proud Nigerian citizen.

Aino served 20 years on the board of the Lagos State Motherless Babies Home and runs the highly successful Quintessence shop in Ikoyi, Lagos. Quintessence is an African arts and crafts shop, although it has a slightly different background (you’ll have to listen to the episode to hear that story!)

Aino is founder and chairperson of the fantastic Ebunoluwa Foundation - an organisation dedicated to supporting vulnerable children in Nigeria. They do this in 3 ways – running a home for orphaned and disabled children, providing scholarships and medical assistance to those in need and advocating for this group of children at community and state level to help change policies and attitudes. Visit their website to find out more about how to get involved – or contact us on info@myafricapodcast.com.
