Making plans is hard to do Today, on My Garage Academy, we search for metaphors to deal with big surprises. On my book shelf, I have a stack of notebooks with plans. They contain page after page of sketches, chicken scratch-math, research, designs, business plans, dreams, and the like. I have always been a dreamer. Even as a child. Have you noticed how being a dreamer is glorified in our culture. The tech entrepreneurs/ inventors bring out new gadgets; making our lives better, save lives, improve lives like miracle workers. Some become famous like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, but most do not. Most dreamers never create the BIG thing. History doesn’t care about them. They are not Mozart, Picasso, Michelangelo, or Beethoven. They create minor works in their garage. They create major works in their minds. Everyone who is built to create, to make, to build is compelled to push the boundaries of the possible. The problem is when life throws curve balls so that they must delay their dream. Stop their project. Trap their ideas in notebooks. The dream doesn’t die, but it will go into deep hibernation. Sometimes a dream is mortally wounded by life and the opportunity window closes. Sometimes the dreamer listens to those around them and is discouraged into a numb complacency. Hardest of all, sometimes the dreamer is thwarted by the need to provide for an equally important and precious cause like their family. Have you noticed that the movie version of great artist/ musician/ businesspeople/ politicians/ fill-in-the-blank all have a similar story. The talent gives up everything in the pursuit of their art and succeeds only to have their own character rip them apart from within. It is the rarest of them, who finds a balance after their meltdown, or rises to greatness while keeping the important things intact. I’ve never heard of a world changer you kept his family intact and healthy. It seems to me that I am given a choice every day. Follow my dreams or serve my family. I want them to both exist together (and am still working toward it), but so far it has been years of life interrupting notebooks of plans. What I am trying to except is that this could be the best thing that has ever happened to me? For if I ever make the world a better place, it will likely be through the family I have raised.
