What if the meaning of the cross is not easily inherited? What if the cross is too weird, too scandalous, too violent to be passively adopted? What if each generation must take up the difficulty of the cross and the questions it begs? Why was the death of Jesus necessary? How was the world different because of it? What was God hoping to to accomplish? Why did the first followers of Jesus see his death not as the end but the beginning of a revolution? What if all these questions and more must be taken on by each of us, not starting from scratch but genuinely starting over? And what if the prize is the cruciform life?
