We've all heard stories of overworked and underpaid truck-drivers, fighting to stay awake and often forced to race to their destination just to make a dollar. And it's not just an urban myth—according to government stats, truck driving has more fatal injuries than all other industries, with 10 times the average number of deaths in the rest of the economy. The cost of heavy-vehicle accidents is almost 3 billion dollars a year. Both the industry and the unions agree trucking needs reform and there's broad consensus that pay levels are part of the solution. Yet the government's decision this week to create a trucking tribunal to set rates of pay has divided opinion. Unions welcomed the move, but some trucking operators fear the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal will reduce flexibility and add extra red tape to their operations. The National Road Transport Operators Association concedes that truck drivers need to be able to make a living out of their work; but they don't agree that higher pay will automatically lead to a safer working environment.
