Mali is a Belgian malinois dog who was part of a British military unit deployed to Afghanistan to work alongside NATO troops in 2012. During one operation in Kabul, Mali helped secure a multi-story building that had been taken over by hostile forces. He conducted searches for explosives while under direct fire. He sustained serious injuries from the attack but had saved many lives. Mali went on to receive the PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) Dickin Medal in recognition for his bravery – the animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award of the British honours system. The footage includes archive shots of the attack in Kabul as well as Mali at his new home in England.
