As a Neuroscientist, one question that I encounter a lot is what is consciousness? So in this video I shall be addressing five things you need to know about consciousness.
Number 1.
Consciousness is the functional expression of the the nervous system, or to be more precise - the brain. The neurons create consciousness.
Number 2.
The brain is not a receiver of consciousness. It is the creator of consciousness. Consciousness does not come from the outside world into the human body and suddenly makes you become conscious. It is exclusively an internal process - a biological process. Without biology, consciousness does not exist.
Number 3.
Because the neurons construct consciousness - the moment these neurons stop working the consciousness ceases to exist. Which means, there is no afterlife, no heaven, no hell - only now and this life. All you got is one life, so make the most of it. You consciousness is born with your brain, and once the brain stops working, you cease to exist as your unique individual self.
Number 4.
There is no hard problem of consciousness. This problem - that is how consciousness is physically produced in biological life, used to haunt philosophers for ages. And it did exist until we started to understand the human brain. And now that we know how the brain works and how every single element of human mental universe is constructed in the neurons, the problem of consciousness no longer exists. The collective expression of the neurons in your anatomy is consciousness.
Number 5.
Consciousness cannot be transferred into computers. Computers can only record information, but they still cannot feel that information outside the programming of their creator. Whatever a computer does, it has to be programmed for it. So, machines can be made a lot smarter than the humans, they cannot be made conscious like humans. If strong artificial intelligence is ever constructed, it will be something radically different than the human mind. It will be something unique.
