Am 11. März 1990 erklärte Litauen seine Unabhängigkeit. Kurz darauf folgten Lettland und Estland. Die damalige Sowjetunion versuchte die Unabhängigkeits-Bewegung im Baltikum noch mit Gewalt zu verhindern - erfolglos. Früh strebte Litauen dann die Aufnahme in die Europäische Union an. Am 1. Mai 2004 - vor 20 Jahren - traten die drei baltischen Länder dann gemeinsam bei. Bereits im März wurden die ehemaligen Ostblock-Staaten Mitglieder der NATO. Bis heute ist das Verhältnis der baltischen Länder zu Russland angespannt. Seit der Annexion der Krim 2014 und Russlands Angriff auf die Ukraine sorgen sich die Menschen auch in Litauen um ihre Sicherheit. Trotz Unterstützung durch NATO und EU.
