Stories of In-law Issues: Killing the Step-Parent
News of the Times Episode 319 | 1870-1871
Is there such a thing as justifiable homicide? Not in 1870 or 1871.
In today’s episode we look at two cases where the cliché of evil step-parent holds true and where the victim breaks.
In our first case from 1870, young William who holds down a steady job and also volunteers, has been in battle with his new alcoholic stepmother who regularly pawns his clothes, including his required uniform for the volunteer rifle corps he attends. A mix-up not of his doing in his pay infuriates her and she ensures he is without food for several days. Finally, William has had enough.
Our second appalling case from 187 involves Ann Burns who, as her mind begins to slip, goes to the police to confess. For many years it would seem she lived as wife to her stepfather, with her mother still living and aware. She begets 5 children with her stepfather. Then one day, she decides she cannot take it any more.
Two stories of murder against a step parent is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
